On August 23, the AFS China, CEAIE welcomed international students from 14 countries, including Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa, Switzerland, Thailand, Tunisia, the United States, and Viet Nam, in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou for an exchange year in China. These students will be undertaking a ten-month immersive experience in Chinese high schools and host families.

The First Glimpse of China: Embracing New Experiences

Upon arrival in China, our AFS exchange students were introduced to a comprehensive orientation program designed to facilitate their transition into this new cultural environment. From “introducing AFS China” to the “Safety Manual,” and from “Survival Chinese,” to “Cultural Understanding,” each component equips the students with the necessary tools to seamlessly integrate into the enriching and diverse landscape of China.

AFS volunteers, who are former exchange students, made friendly interactions with newly arrived exchange students in China, conversing in Italian, German, and English. They offered valuable guidance and shared their own experiences.

First Footsteps: Exploring the Hues of Chinese Culture

“No one can be a true hero without climbing the Great Wall!” In Beijing, the students embarked on a visit to the Great Wall, experiencing the majestic beauty of this ancient architectural marvel. Their exploration of Chinese culture commenced at this historic site, initiating a soulful interaction with the rich tapestry of Chinese history.

In Shanghai, the students leisurely walked along The Bund, admiring the city skyline overlooking the Huangpu River, and appreciating the captivating mixture of modernity and tradition.

In Guangzhou, the students had the opportunity to deeply engage with the rich cultural heritage of Lingnan. They enjoyed the night view of the Pearl River, admired the city’s dynamic lights, and immersed themselves in the lively charm and spirit of Guangzhou.

Connected Across Miles: Sharing Initial Impressions

During video calls, exchange students located in three different cities overcame physical distance to express their initial perceptions of China. The infectious laughter and enthusiastic cheers from both ends of the screen combined to create a symphony of excitement. Lingyan Jiang, the National Director of AFS China, CEAIE, warmly engaged with the students, urging them to fearlessly explore, delve deeply into learning, and embrace the profound beauty of Chinese culture throughout the upcoming ten months.

A Letter to the Future Self

In the concluding session of the orientation, our newly arrived exchange students composed letters to themselves, to remain unopened until their exchange journey ends. These letters captured their current reflections and aspirations, embodying their visions for the future. When they reread these letters in ten months, they will undoubtedly see their growth and transformation — truly invaluable fruits of their time spent in China.

To be Continued: A Journey of Cultural Discovery Awaits

These three days were merely the prologue to a much longer cultural exploration. Over the course of the next ten months, the students from various backgrounds will face cultural shocks, learn a new language, make new friends, and craft their own unique stories of growth on this vibrant land.
