The 2024 Sino-American CHEPD 1+2+1 Program University Presidents’ Forum held at Jiangsu University

The 2024 Sino-American CHEPD 1+2+1 Program University Presidents’ Forum was held on at Jiangsu University with the theme of enhancing US-China universities collaboration for student mobility and talent development. Notable speakers included Yang Jun, Secretary-General of the China Education Association for International Exchange, Chen Dali, Deputy Director General, Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges, Ministry of Education, China, Terry Brown, Vice President of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, Alicia Edwards, Director of U.S. Consulate Shanghai Public Affairs, Zhou Yajun, Deputy Director-General of Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education, and Shen Yanfei, Deputy Director of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government.

Yang Jun emphasized the importance of the CHEPD 1+2+1 Program in promoting cooperation and exchange between provincial universities in China and the United States, consolidating and expanding the depth of cooperation and exchange. The partnership between Chinese and American universities is precious, and the mutual trust and cooperation between them have laid a solid foundation for deepening cultural exchanges between China and the United States and enhancing mutual understanding between the young generation from China and the United States. This partnership has laid a solid foundation for cultural exchanges and mutual understanding between Chinese and American students. Yang Jun hopes that universities on both sides will continue to work together to cultivate international talents, facilitate student exchanges, and promote mutual understanding through educational exchanges.

Chen Dali highlighted the success of the Sino-American CHEPD 1+2+1 Program in facilitating cultural exchange between Chinese and American universities over the past 20 years. He emphasized the importance of cooperation, mutual benefits, and quality talent development in continuing to enhance educational exchanges. Additionally, he discussed the program's role in contributing to economic and trade development and regional cooperation in both countries.

Terry Brown emphasized the strong partnership between AASCU and various educational organizations in China, highlighting the importance of promoting the Young Envoys Scholarship program to foster mutual understanding and respect between Chinese and American students.

Alicia Edwards emphasized the importance of exchanges between Chinese and American youth for the relationship between the countries, and the US Consulate General in Shanghai is dedicated to fostering educational exchanges between China and the United States.

Zhou Yajun emphasized the significance of educational exchange cooperation in Sino-US relations, highlighting successful programs such as 'Splendid Jiangsu' and the Sino-American CHEPD 1+2+1 Program. She also recommended further cooperation and exploration of different forms of exchanges.

Shen Yanfei highlighted the successful exchanges and cooperation between Jiangsu Province and the United States, particularly in sister cities, economy, trade, and cultural exchanges. They emphasized the importance of people-to-people and cultural exchanges in Sino-US relations and invited American friends to visit Jiangsu and experience the province's beauty.

Li Hongbo and Katherine Frank delivered keynote speeches at the event. Li Hongbo shared Jiangsu University's open educational philosophy and cooperation with American universities, highlighting the importance of international talent cultivation. Katherine Frank emphasized the role of student mobility and academic cooperation in bridging cultural differences and promoting mutual understanding, using examples from her university's collaboration with Changshu Institute of Technology. She also talked about the talent development model and its benefits for students in a globalized world.

The panel discussion session was chaired by David Silva, Provost and Vice President of Salem State University, and Hu Kai, Vice President of Lanzhou University of Finance and Economics. Panelists including Janette Muir, Vice Provost of George Mason University, Julie Whitlow, Vice Provost of Salem State University, Wang Jun, Vice President of Jiangsu Institute of Technology, Sohail Agboatwala, Senior Vice Provost of Troy University, and Liu Wenbin, Vice President of Nanfang College Guangzhou, discussed topics such as establishing quality standards and evaluation systems for the Sino-American CHEPD 1+2+1 Program, the practical value of Sino-US student exchange and its impact on achievements, promoting mutual trust and sustainability in Sino-US university partnerships, strengthening and expanding cooperation with new technologies in the new stage, enriching content and creating more diverse forms of cooperation. The discussion guests unanimously agreed that CHEPD platform is highly valuable for enhancing exchanges and mutual trust between China and the United States, deepening understanding, developing friendships, and jointly cultivating qualified global citizens.

The President's Forum witnessed the release of a joint initiative by Chinese and American universities in attendance, proposing increased student exchanges and mutual support to foster understanding and friendships between Chinese and American young students.Over 120 senior administrators from 50 universities attended the forum, which was chaired by Cai Yingfeng, Vice President of Jiangsu University.
