On August 29, Fu Bo, Deputy Secretary-General of the China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE), was invited to attend the AY25-26 English Language Fellow Post-Arrival Orientation in Beijing, organized by the Regional English Language Office (RELO) of the U.S. Embassy in China. Representatives from the U.S. Embassy in China, U.S. Consulate General in Shanghai, Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges of the Ministry of Education of China, together with representatives from Chinese hosting universities and four American fellows joined the session.

On behalf of CEAIE, Fu Bo warmly welcomed the four American fellows. Through an overview of CEAIE's achievements in operating the U.S.-China Teachers Exchange Program, the U.S.-China Friendship Volunteers Program and so on, she emphasized that the English Language Fellow Program serves not only as an educational exchange initiative, but also as an example of successful U.S.-China cooperation in education. Fu encouraged the fellows to best apply their teaching experiences, immerse themselves in Chinese culture, and become ambassadors of U.S.-China friendship. CEAIE is committed to supporting host universities and the American fellows in their teaching endeavors in China.

Ms. Mary Sue Fields, Minister Counselor for Public Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in China, highlighted the importance of academic exchange in U.S.-China cooperation. She mentioned that this year's English Language Fellow Program reflects the significance of education collaboration between the two countries. She encouraged fellows to actively embrace their teaching opportunities in China and best fulfill their teaching responsibilities for this program.

Mr. Zhao Lei, Deputy Director-General of the Ministry of Education's Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges, reiterated the program's significance in current U.S.-China educational exchanges. He expressed hope that the fellows would help enhance Chinese students' English proficiency, collaborate with local educators on innovative teaching methodologies, and contribute to high-quality English education at Chinese universities.

During the session, Chinese and American representatives held lively discussions about program implementation and teaching plans. Professor Zhou Zuoyu, Vice President of the China National Minority Education Research Association and former Vice President of Beijing Normal University gave a lecture, helping the cohort of fellows better understand China's education landscape and cultural differences between the two countries.

To advance the English language education and mutual understanding between the U.S. and China, CEAIE and RELO cooperate to administer the 2025-2026 English Language Fellow Program, inviting experienced American English-teaching fellows to Chinese universities for a ten-month assignment. The current cohort will teach in Zhejiang Normal University, Hangzhou Normal University, Qufu Normal University, and Xi'an International Studies University.
